Peanut butter makers try to spread word products are safe

CNN) -- Peanut butter makers not affected by the deadly salmonella outbreak linked to a Georgia peanut plant are trying to get consumers to keep buying peanut butter. It could be an uphill battle.

J.M. Smucker Co. wants to assure consumers that its Jif brand of peanut butter is safe to eat.

Companies such as ConAgra Foods Inc. and J.M. Smucker Co. have started running ads and offering coupons, trying to lure peanut butter customers as sales have plunged at least 20 percent since the salmonella outbreak.

Eight people have died and nearly 600 have been sickened in the outbreak. The original peanut butter recall launched weeks ago has expanded to include more than 1,000 products.

Are they doing enough? Should the food companies be more regulated?

i dont think they are doing enough because thats pretty serious if people have died from it and alot of people have got sick. the food companies should be aware and try to prevent it. They should tell more people about it so they know that they can get sick or even die.

Yes they are doing enough i dont think they went out and said hey we are gonna posion people and give them salminola. Yes they are going out and trying to stop the spread. Stuff happens and people make mistakes. I really think that it is not good for peole to be sick wiht that it is bad but i think that the person was probably like he i work at a peanut butter factory how serious can i take this job then makes a big mistake or there may have been some bad peanuts.

I dont think that they are doing enough. It's pretty serious and some companies are trying to tell people that there product is safe when really isn't. I think they could be doing more because this is pretty serious seeing as how people have died from it.

Well i think they are doing what they feel needs to be done even though it wasn't there plant or brand of peanut butter that was causing the deadly outbreak. If i were them i would check all my products over twice before i send them out, because i wouldn't want to be blamed for the peanut butter crises.

Food companies I believe should always be aware of what is being put into their products and what is going on with their products as well. I think they need to pay attention a lot more to what they are selling. So I really don't think they are doing enough if they are finding harmful things like salmonella in their products.

I think that they are trying, but i think that it is going to take a bunch more than what they are doing. I think with all of the sickness' that it is going to be a LONG time before they can get their normal amounts of customers back. With 8 deaths, i definately think that the food companies should be more regulated. I feel sick about this whole situation. Now you wonder what foods are safe and what foods arent.

i dont really care what they do. i think that people should think about other people and not just their money. i think people should have a good enough brain to know if someone is going to get sick from it dont sell it. some people are retarded.
