WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Humane Society of the United States released a video Wednesday it says shows mistreatment of "downed" cows at a California slaughterhouse -- and one lawmaker said it raises questions about the safety of the nation's food supply.
The video shows Hallmark Meat Packing Co. workers administering repeated electric shocks to downed cows -- animals that are too sick, weak or otherwise unable to stand on their own. Workers are seen kicking cows, jabbing them near their eyes, ramming them with a forklift and shooting high-intensity water up their noses in an effort to force them to their feet for slaughter.
The society says the video was shot last year by an undercover investigator who wore a hidden camera under his clothes when he worked at the facility.
Downed cows are more easily contaminated and may carry diseases harmful to consumers. U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations prohibit allowing disabled or contaminated animals into the food supply. Officials said they would investigate.

Well I think alot of different things about this story. First of all, I think that that person that had the camera should be punished. He did not have permission to do that. Also, I think cows that are sick or have something wrong with them should not be made into meat for people to eat. It could be contaminated and could make people sick. I also think that something should be done about this. I think that the cows that are being made into meat, should be investigated and tested before they are slaughtered.
I dont think that the person with the video camera should have been able to record that, because he didnt have the permission to do so. I also dont think that the cows that are sick and have a disease or a problem that they should not be able to be made into food for people to eat. I think that the cows should be tested before they are made into meat, they chould check out the cows to make sure that there is nothing wrong with them. It could be harmful to the people that eat the meat from the sick cows.
I don't think that they should be able to try to get downed cows up to slaughter and sell the meat because that means that they are usually sick. That sickness can get into the meat and then they will sell that meat. Then people buy that meat and eat it and that can make them sick. I think that they should not be able to use the meat of downed cattle. It is dangerous to the people who eat them.
I think that whoever recorded that shows what the real world is like and how people treat things in general if it isnt how they like it. Also, i think that the government needs to step in and maybe do something about this Hallmark Meat Packing Co. because that is ridiculous. One they are abusing animals, and two they are using sick possibly disease carrying cows and using them to process into food.
I think that the people who did that to those cows should pay for their actions and the entire ranch should suffer and pay like a $1000000 fine for what they did. That is a really sad example of animal cruelty it is really mean and some of those people should be put in jail. They should all pay their own individual fines to. That ranch shouldn't be able to have anymore cows either that was a really bad thing to do and the people at that ranch should pay for it. Those Poor Cows:(
They should not of done that to the to the cow. Any cow that was sick when it died should not be made in to meat. It might make the people who eat it sick.
I think that cows that are sick shouldnt be able to be made into food for humans. That could make alot of people sick if they are contaminated and have disease. It is kinda good that the person recorded that so people actually know about the treatment of animals. The government should have testing to make sure all the meat is ok for people to eat.
That is horrible. Why would people do all those things to sick cows that can't even get up? it is also bad to try and sell that meat to people because it would be bad.
First the cows should be killed and not be made into meat if they are sick and have dieses. Also if the cows are on the ground and should be killed right their and taken out. ALso the guy who filmed it should get punished.
I think that the workers at the meat company should have to go to jail. They are trying to give us contaminated meat that could make us sick. If it wasn't for that investigator we could all be eating bad meat without even knowing about it. Having that meat in stored though could be worse than some people think. It will make all of the food around it contaminated too because it will spread through the air.
I don't think that the person who video taped that should have because he didn't have the permission to be doing that. I think that if the cows are sick and a have bad sickeness that they shouldn't make food from that cow. They should make a test for cows to make sure that everything is ok and that the food will be ok for humans.
I think that it is good that the person recorded this. They did not have permission, but he/she did it so that the truth could come out. The people working there should not be doing that. If a cow is sick, you should not be making into food for people. That could get the people who eats it sick.
I feel really bad for the cows. They shouldn't be treated this way especially if they are sick or injured. If it is proven that the meat could be unsafe, it should not be put into our food supply. I think the government should regulate slaughter houses better if this mistreatment continues to occur.
I think this is nuts. PETA is going to have a huge problem with that. If the slaughterhouse wants to use the sick cow I think they should have to test the meat. And I think that they should have to find a humane way to get the cow to the slaughter building if they want to kill it.
I feel that this is just a stupid way on treating the cows. I feel that there should be some regulations on how cows are moved even before they are slaugtered.
I think that Allison would have a good opinion on this issue since she is a vegitarian and she does not like to eat any type of meat b/c of all of the things that animals have to go through. I think that this is very bad and that they should just kill the cows like they do horses so that they don't have to suffer. THE END
I think the person with the camea should be punished for what he did. He didn't have permission to that the picture. I do think that you should just leave the dead and sick cows alone. You shouldn't kill cows without permission.

This is a good thing that this story got out. This is horrible that this is happening. Cows are things too! The meat should also be tested before we eat them.
I think that if there is a cow that is sick, there should be no question just dont put the cow in with the rest of them. It could be harmful to the people if a cow that is sick gets into the meat supply. But the guy with the camera should be like fired or somthing because he shouldnt of been able to record it, even if it was like an investagation. Thats what i think.
THis is horrible. PETA is gunna go off on these guys. THey should check the cows for disease first.
I do not think it is not that big of a deal. They make everything sound way worse than it is. Cattle are animals and people eat them. We need to get them to the slaughterhouse and I do not think this sounds that bad to get them to move. However I do agree that if they are diseased they should not be put in our food supply.
I think that these cows should not be turned into burgers, because they are not healthy. They could cause health problems for everyone. These cows could cause worldwide chaos or something like that using like a sickness or something.
I like to eat cows like in burgeres. This is sad that people just go out and hurt cows like that. I love mo mo cows and I like to drink me to build strong bones.
This isn't the right way and someone should do something about this so it doesn't happen again. I think cows should be treated a lot better then that because its where most of our food comes from.
I think that those people are very crual and should be punished for their actions. Even though the cows are going to be slaughter they could treat them in a manner of some respect. They are still living and aren't being killed so don't use torture to try and get them up and moving. That is animal abuse. It disgusts me to here that their are people out there that accually do this sort of thing to cows.
I think this is just terrible that people would do that. The fact that they would shock harmless cows. Its just sick. These people have no morals and should be shocked themselves. However, the cows had it coming. just kidding.
I think that it's a good thing that the guy did have the camera that he did. Nobody should be doing that to animals so it's good that they were caught. It's so sad that they are treating these downed cows like this. I don't want to eat cows that may have a sickness so they should be tested. I just still think it's bad that they were treated that way.
OMG...that is like to mean how could someone even do that to a cow even if that cow was sick. I think that the man with the camera had every right to record what he did because now we know how they really treat the animals that they have to kill. I still cant believe that they did that to the cows.
