Va. Senate Backs Phaseout of Trans Fats in School Food

By Sandhya Somashekhar and Annie GowenWashington Post Staff Writers Wednesday, January 30, 2008; Page B01
RICHMOND, Jan. 29 -- The Virginia Senate voted unanimously Tuesday to phase out the use of artery-clogging trans fats in food sold at public schools, from the cheese pizza in the cafeteria to the chips in the vending machine.

The bill would direct the state superintendent of public instruction to develop guidelines for the elimination of the additive, which has been associated with heart disease, in meals and snacks sold during school hours.

We are now controlling the foods that are served in our school but is it really enough to stop the obesity problem in the U.S?

No, we need to make sure that all the students are getting enough exercise. Eating right is a start to stop obesity, but we need to do more. Schools should stop selling junk food and pop during school hours. Another thing schools need to do is offer better, nutritious foods. Our school should offer a salad bar. We need to do more so less kids are obese.

Absolutley not. Thats not even close enough to start decreasing a fraction of obesity rate. Just because they can't eat it at school, doesnt mean they cant eat it at home or in other places besides school. If they figure that out they could try and stop them from selling it in stores. However i dont think that would make people very happy and it would probably cause a little bit of disfunction in our society. We need food. They don't have to shut it down and keep it away from us, they just need to make sizes smaller or make them with healthier ingredients.

no...this will help but it wont slove the problems. people need to learn that eating bad foods will make you obese and they should cut back on those.

No, i don't think it is enough. Just because the schools can serve healthier food doesn't mean that obesity will go home, they can still eat what they want when they are out of school. I think all grades in high school should also have gym instead of just 9th grade because with gym every year that will make a big difference. Our school doesn't really serve much healthy food either so is a problem with people getting obese. They should give out more fruits and vegetables instead of always something greasy and fatty.

I think that the obesity is a really bad thing so we need to make a rule type thing where kids exercise all of the time and so that they can get their excersize out of the food that they eat.

I think that it will not get rid of the problem but it will help to make a difference. If schools take off the menu alot of the foods that could contribute to obesity and substitute them with salads, fresh fruits and vegetables, that would help the problem. Also, schools could offer more physical education and activity classes to get kids in shape. I think that our school doesn't do enough for this cause. I think that we should have a salad bar and be offered choices. We should also have, within the salad bar, a variety of fruits and vegetables. This would be a very good thing to add to our school to help out the students and even the teachers.

This might make some impact but that wont stop the kids from just going home and eating the same foods. Just because your banning food doesnt mean you will make the kids exercise and it will make them healthier. Because all that will happen is they will go home and problaly eat more of the trans fats because they dont get them in school.

No, I don't think that the problem is the food in our cafaterias. It is what they do outside of school. If they don't excercise adn they don't eat healthy at home that is why they are obese. The food they eat at school is healthier than the food at home. Kids eat foods that are way worse for them at home than they do at school

You cant stop obesity by changing what you can have in school. Instead of getting rid of the foods that they say are bad for you i say keep them, but add as much health food. Schools should have a salad bar are some thing so the can eat right and eat what they like. Further more they will need exercise to stop obesity because no matther how well you eat it you dont exercise you will get obesity.

Nope, schools should have more healthy foods, and not all this junk food. They should not have pop in schools erither, or candy. They can still eat all this food at home though too. I think that schools should have like a PE class. They could also have a class that teaches about all the foods and the effects it can have on people. They should be offered a variety of foods to choose from like salads!

I think this is a really good idea but it isn't enought to stop obesity. If your parents make fatty foods or have chips in the house, of course you are going to eat them, and the school cant really stop that. Maybe if they have good enough foods that taste good, maybe the kids will tell their parents to start making some of this food. Plus-- there is alot of obese adults and changing the food at schools isn't going to change the way they eat.
I do think it would be a great idea [like briana said] to offer a salad bar.

I don't think that will be enough because the state can't control what happens at home they could eat way more junk and stuff there than at school. Everywhere they go people need to get exercise no matter where they are and there are obese kids everywhere and there is not alot that the states can do about it execpt for controlling what they can

I think that doing that is a great idea and will help. It will make kids healthier. You might see a decrease, but kids will still be obese though. It is not just what you eat but how much you eat, and they can't control that. Also, kids need to get exercise. The kids can still just go home or pack a lunch and eat fatty foods. In order to have a healthy weight you have to have a proper balance between energy contained in the food you eat and the energy your body uses. Parents really need to step up for their obese kids and help them. They probably have the most control over it. I like those foods, (I would hate if they got rid of pizza!) but you can't eat it all the time and you have to exercise.

No I think limiting fats won't solve the problem. People need to eat better for sure but they also need to exercise and do physical activities. It shouldn't be the shcool's responsibiltity either the parents and the kids themselves need to take an intiative to make themselves healthier.

This does help prevent obesity, but it still won't completely get rid of it. In the end it really doesnt matter how much trans fat is in the food, the person could still eat a lot more than they should (with no trans fats) and become or stay obese. Since they are just banning these at schools people could still go home and eat these bad things so it really doesn't help too much of anything.

No, I think that the main problem of obesity in the United States today is that kids are not getting enough exercise. I think parents also have a big role in how kids eat and the actiivities they do at home. People need to be educated about having a healthy life style which includes eating right and exercising regularly. I think that is starts when kids are young and getting them into a healthly routine.

NO, i don't think it is enough but it is a good step. Most of the day kids spend in school and if they can't get fatty snacks then they are better off. But I think there needs to be a lot more action if we are going to really help the obesity problem.

I think that getting rid of these foods at school will not make a huge difference. If there is no good food left at school lunches, kids will start bringing thier own, most likely with the very foods that the school is trying to keep out of our diets.

I think it is a step. It will not solve the whole problem but nothing will instantly make everyone in the US skinny. I think its a good thing that this school took a step to try and change the ways of thier students. No, this wont stop them from eating junk food all the time, but it may slowly get them used to not eating it as often. This is not where the chain should end, however, everyone needs to be doing more to help this problem. All schools should get involved. Mostly people just need to be aware of how these types of food affect thier bodies. They need to eat right and excerise as well.

I don't think that we have to control it in the schools. It should be watched and the lunches should be healthy, but you can't control what everyone eats. If schools do that, then kids will probably start to bring their own lunches and it will not be very healthy.

It's a good step and i think it should help some. However, kids need to take some responsibility and watch what their eating. Parents can also help by making nutritous meal for their kids.

I think that eating the right foods and excersicing properley are the main things that you have to do to be fit and in shape. Extra curricular activities is a great way to stay fit. If the schools take away certain foods, i dont think that will solve the problem.

Not in the least bit. People will still go to very unhealthy restaurants and eat unhealthy foods. Its not like kids only eat at school. They probably eat more meals out of school than in school. So its stupid that they are even trying to do so.

streckfuss said...

No, we need ot make sure all the kids are getting enough exercise. People also need to eat better. Limiting fats will not solve the problem.

No, because the school doesn't house the children 24/7. The schools feed us the recomended serving size for our food. Ya the school is helping slow down the obesity rate. That is really all the school can do. It is esentially up to the parents and the children themselves to watch what they eat, and take in lesser amounts of the foods that they normally eat. Don't go out to fast food resturants as much as usuall. Poeple just need to plain out eat healthier foods. They need to eat in moderation. But also with that they need to exercise. Just eating healthy won't help stop obesity. You have to go out and to some physical activities.

People eat just by how there parents eat. Most kids will look like the parents and weigh like there parents did at your age. This is unless you exercise a lot. I don't think the United States will ever stop this problem, not unless we just have all healthy foods and get ruide of all the junk foods.

Reeber said...

No, i think this is more of a thing that takes place in homes. Parents should be monitoring what their kids are eating. So depending on the parents and what they say is good and what is bad can make all the difference what a kid eats and whether or not they will be obese.

Anonymous said...

I don't think it is enough to get rid of the problem. It will do some good. I believe that the kids will just go home and eat more fatty foods since they didn't get any during school.

Tina said...

I don't that it will stop obesity. It may help, but people will still get trans fats outside of school. Kids can also bring their lunch to school, so they can still get fats at school. I think that this will lower the obesity rate some, but not enough. We can still do more, like have more exercising at school.

No i dont think that is even part of it..we are only eating one meal a day at school sometimes two..so think of what we eat at home..the goverment has no way to regulate that..it will help a little bit thats not even half of the problem.
