Satellite unlikely to pose danger to humans

By Andrea Shalal-Esa
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A disabled U.S. spy satellite is likely to break into small pieces when it falls to Earth within weeks, posing little danger to humans, U.S. government officials and space experts said on Monday.

Most, if any, debris that survives the intense heat of re-entry would likely fall into the oceans, which cover more than 70 percent of the Earth, White House National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

What could happen if more satellites where disabled and fell to the Earth?

I think that if more satilites are going to fall to the Earth, that alot of us could be in great danger. And also, that means that they arent working and we are wasting alot of money on them. One of them could easily fall on someones house, car or even a school. (YES NO SCHOOL!!) But that could really put a threat on us.

That could be kind of scary if all of a sudden things started falling out of the sky. I think that the government officials and space experts need to keep an eye on them. They shouldn't be falling. If they see that one is going to fall they should figure out where its going to go and tell those people. It depends on what kind of satellite is falling. I guess it is not that dangerous if it is tiny pieces and falls into the ocean. It could be very dangerous if huge parts start falling, that could damage things and hurt people. Plus, that is a lot of money going to waste. Satellites aren't cheap and now they're breaking. That's not good.

If more satellites fell to the Earth that means that any remains of them after coming into the atmostphere and burning up can be a big threat. They are over lots of cities and that means that buildings could get destroyed and people could get killed. That would endanger everybody around and they won't even know about the satellites until they come down.

It could be pretty dangerous. If they are falling, that means they aren't working and we had spent alot of money on them. Even if it is only little pieces, if many little pieces fall, that could amount to alot. If it falls into the ocean, it could harm the animals too. Falling satellites could damage our personal things and could hurt people.

It would be scary if that happened. The pieces wont always fall into the ocean. Some of them will fall on the earth and it could hurt or even kill people.
We dont want to know that satellites dont work.

I think that all satelites that fall to the earth wont effect us becuase they will all burn up in the atomsphere any ways so its not like we will be hurt from them. The only problem is that satellites do cost alot so that is alot of money going to waste but things dont last forever but about the satellites falling to earth it wont do much damage.

I think that if more satelites continue to fall to Earth, it could cause some possible dangers. It is definately not a good thing that our satellites are failing as it proves the technology used it not being successful. We may need to revamp our designs or use a different type of satelite if these continue to fail causing danger to our environment and species living on Earth.

It would be somewhat bad. The oceans cover 70% of earth but after a while, chance says that one piece will eventually hit something on land that is important. It could be a car or someone, so I think it is somewhat dangerous.

It could be a problem. Most of them will probably hit water but there is a chance it could hit something of value. It would be a small threat.

This would be very dangerous. It could cause alot of danger by damaging the Earth or the people on it. The technology is obviously not working in that area if they are worried about this.

If the satellites are too large or fall at the wrong speed they would not break up as this one did. These large chunks of satellites could cause large damages to humans and property. It is important to keep an eye on these satellites to make sure they stay in orbit.

I think that it could be really bad if more satelilites fall out of space, becuase one of these times its not going to hit the ocean. And if they keep hitting the ocean there will be a lot of debris in the water. And that wouldnt be a good thing for ocean life.

I think we would all be in some kind of danger. Debris could come down and hit houses. If they hit houses and destroy them, where are they supposed to live, these pieces of debris can even kill people.

If satellites start falling to the earth people will die and it will come done to pretty much one person. Just like the movie, I Am Legend. This would be me instead of Will Smith. The could come to an end.

I believe if satilities begin to fall it could begin to cause a great deal of problems. Since they are falling it means that they aren't being used efficiently. If this continues we may need to redo and improve the satilities to fit our needs.

The more satellites that are disabled the more chance there is of people being in danger. It's not a guarantee that the satellite will drop into the ocean so people could be scared of the debris. At least if they are not using the satellite or it no longer works then they aren't still spending money on it, but I just hope that nobody is in danger of this and that they are sure to look at all the risks before disabling anymore.

I think that this would be a bad thing. It would just add to the pollution that we have. Falling into the ocean could lead to extinction of certain sea animals. This could eventually be a horrible thing for the environment.
