Whenever you type an address into an Internet browser, that address is instantly resolved into the site's numerical Internet address by a DNS server located somewhere in the world. On Tuesday, Symantec announced that online criminals have started to remotely redirect your home network router's DNS server so that whenever you type in a financial institution or other trusted site, your browser will instead be redirected to a bogus or phishing Web site.
The practice, called pharming, usually attacks the DNS servers directly, but this latest attack brings it all home (if you are using broadband connectivity). Fortunately, the routers and institutions affected by this current attack are limited to one country, Mexico, but Symantec warns that word of this real-world attack could bring similar attacks elsewhere.
Last year, researchers at Symantec and the University of Indiana reported that remotely changing a home router's DNS server was theoretically possible. The theoretical attack used Javascript on a specially crafted Web page, and affected only wireless routers. The attack in use today uses e-mail, and it can affect non-wireless routers as well.
Are computers really safe?

No, not really. Although they are a great tool to keep in touch and to find information, they can be extremely harmful to people and to their computers. They can cause many viruses. You may be a trusted website, but people can always view what you are doing. Computers can be a good source of information and keeping up with your friends, but it can also be a bad thing.
Comptures can be safe at times but if you dont have anything to protect them you might have some problems from virus and hackers. But if you have a firewall and other protection devices you might be alright because the majority of the time the hackers will go after a non-firewall computer because it is really easy then. So computers can by really safe if you protect them.
i think that the computers can be a very good source of information if they are used in the right way and i think that it can also be a very bad thing because people that you don't know could be tracking you and stuff so i think that they are ok if you use them in the right way.
I dont think they are that safe. I mean.. there's sometimes like with firewall and stuff like that that make it safe, but people can easily get to you. Computer's are really good for learning and communicating with your friends, but they can be bad because people may hack, or other people may try to talk to you when you dont even know them.
Computers aren't really that safe. There are lots of people out there that are hackers and use the internet to steal things like money from people and banks. The hackers can put viruses into your computer and you can't detect it while it is doing something. Even though there are some trusted sites, the hackers can still get in their and mess with it putting everybody using that site in danger. Even though computers can be good for a lot of things, there are still lots of risks and dangers that are involved with them.
They can be, but with newer technology coming out every day, it seems that they are becoming more of a problem than a benifit. With hackers and people that want peoples personal info, the internent is becoming a dangerous place to be.
Computers are very helpful, if used right. You should always be careful in what you put in your computer. Now with new technology people are finding new ways to get into the computers.
they can be very helpful if someone uses tehm right and does not abuse them.... they are very helpful and easy to use and fun if you are not abusing it tho.... yeah
It depends on what you do with your computer. You should never give out any info unless you're sure. You are taking a risk when you use a computer, though. I think we need to come up with a better way to make our computers safer. Computers are very useful and we need them for a lot of things.
I think that computers can be very dangerous if you don't be careful what you do on them. You must be very careful not to put out any personal information that could be used against you. However, there are many benefits to using computers so I think you just have to be careful what information you put out there. Just make sure the sites you are using are safe and secure for your information.
Computers are just fine if you have a firewall. IF you don't have one then hackers can get into them very easily. A firewall should keep everything safe though.
No I don't think that computers are safe. That's one of the disadvantages of computer technology. But there are definentily ways to keep your computer safe with different software. Also just common sense, like not putting your personal information on the internet, is smart. If you don't put your info. out there and don't click around too much you can be safe.
Computers are safe but we must be careful with what we do with them. You should get a firewall and other protective software. You should always be careful before you click on a link and not to give out personal information unless you are sure it is a legit site.
I think that computers are safe when used properly. People should be aware of the harmful things that can come about with using computers. People should just be more careful about putting personal information online because you never known who will be looking.
I think some computer systems are safe. Mostly just the ones without internet, but you can't really do anything with out it. The internet is very unreliable.
I think computers can be safe if people would use the properly. People can't do that. People that are adults talk online to teenagers and talk about naughty stuff. These people get caught on the hit show, Date Line. We just got to have technology to stop this on the computers. I don't think we will find the technology because some computer geek will tap in just brake the law again and again.
Computers can be safe if you use them safely. If you give out information that other people can use to find you or charge stuff against you then it is bad. Using computers for information can be benefical.
Computers can be safe as long as you are using them with caution and care. The internet and many other programs have possible viruses that your computer can get. You can use computers for information, but they can also be used to chat and blog. You still have to be careful what you actually put on the internet because you never know who may read it or track you.
I think that computers are safe if they are used in the right way. If you are using them to talk to friends, do homework, and other things that are not bad, they are ok to use. But if you are useing them to harass people, abuse, and do innapropriate things, they are not okay. You could think that you are not going to get in trouble, but you could easily get to a website that is bad or talk to someone that you don't know. Computer can be good things if you use them in the right way.
Computers can be safe if you are smart about what and how much information you put out there. Computers can be a scary thing because if you put even the littlest information people can find more about you. Computers are also a very helpful tool and are becoming a part of our everyday life.
No i dont think they are safe at all but, you can be smart online, so it reduces your risk a little, i always worry about making sure i know who im talkin to and that its not someone else. But, if you have firewall protection and blockers it makes everything a little more safe..so it all depends on what you are doing and how you are using it
